Oktane visits the Terror Chambre

Oktane dropped into Photo Bang Bang for a session in the Terror Chambre last night. She’s in town for a huge tattoo convention.

I’ve been working with gels more lately. It’s the next thing I’m attempting to bring into my work. For fantasy work, like this, it adds a falseness that I like. It makes things feel more cinematic and graphical.

I’ve gotten to do some shopping for this set too. The wheelchair, bone saw and cleaver are all new acquisitions.

Strobist: SB800 into 16″ Westcott Mini-Apollo with blue gel at camera left and SB-80DX gelled red with grid at camera right.

Angel enters the Terror Chambre

Joel Spencer designed this set for us at Photo Bang Bang a couple weeks ago. I’ve helped Marcos out with a shoot or two in it, but this is my first time using it. I booked some time with Angel Beau over the weekend. She’s one of my favorite people to work with and I’m very happy with the results.

Technical details: two gelled speedlights. The red one is gridded and the blue one is a softbox. f8 and ISO400 using a Nikon D7000 and 18-200VR lens.

Lincoln Park

I was out in Chicago last week. I decided to take some pictures of my friend’s house. Her family bought the place when Lincoln Park was still a slum. It’s and old 3-flat that last benefited from remodeling in the 1970′s. The basement contains a workshop and storage. I’ve always been drawn to basements, because they’re utterly foreign to me, having grown up in Las Vegas. They’re generally kind of unkempt places, full of filth, grime and authenticity. That sort of sums up Chicago for me too.

Boom’s Basement

Boom is a model I’ve worked with many times. It takes a good working relationship to come up with photos like this. We shot these in her basement. One thing about being from Vegas is the lack of gruddy old basements to work in.

Adrienne really got a kick out of this introduction to sparklers and painting with light. It’s easy to do. Just set your camera to a 30 second exposure, set your focus, shoot the picture and run around with a lightsource in the frame. It’s fun.

Angel and Tarah: Post Apocalypse Cannibal fun

A friend of mine told me about the ruins of this house about an hour outside of town. Littered with doll parts and an entire house full of burned memories, it sounded like a fun place to check out. On the way there, we found another burned down house and explored it instead. There’s lots of great locations all around Vegas. I met Tarah through Angel at a suspension party. Tarah lost her arm (and some tattoos) to cancer. We’re going to be doing some more work

Sadie and some Polaroids

One of my good model friends, Sadie, ~~has moved to Vegas~~. She helped me test out some Polaroid film I bought off my homeless friend. I wound up with 6 twin packs for a fair price. Interesting purple stripe, muted colors and dehydrated developer gel that doesn’t quite cover the image. It’s fun to introduce chaos into the process and see what comes out.
